Step Into Estelline's Past
The Reliabank of Estelline has seen many changes in
its 84 year history. Along with many changes, it has enjoyed continual
growth.
The Reliabank's history began in South Shore, S.D.,
in 1920. Fred Beskow, a farmer in the area, bought stock in the
newly formed Farmers National Bank and was elected president. In
1925, the bank moved to Strandburg, S.D., and in 1928 moved to Estelline.
It was located in the building that had housed a banking institution
since 1895. A.J. Boeder was named manager of the bank and Fred Beskow
continued as president.
Since that time, the bank has undergone many more
changes. The bank became state chartered in 1945 and a corresponding
name change took place. The bank building has been remodeled four
times, most recently in 1974.
In 1968, Walter K. Johnson purchased the controlling
interest in The Farmers State Bank from the Fred Beskow Estate.
Walt Johnson came to the bank in 1944, replacing A.J. Boeder as
manager. He had been assistant manager of the Gregory branch of
the Northwestern National Bank of Sioux Falls. Johnson served as
Republican County Chair for 15 years and in the State Senate from
Hamlin and Kingsbury counties for two terms. Walter K. Johnson also
served as president of the South Dakota Banker's Association in
1954-1955. At the time of Johnson's death in 1976, his son David
W. Johnson became managing officer of the bank and Howard H. Peters,
an Alpena, S.D., banker, became president. |
